Abu Abdurrahman Hatim bin Unwan or Sufi who is famous for his noble character. The nickname as-sham or ‘the deaf" is one example. Because of keeping the feeling of an old woman who wanted to ask him something, Hatim pretended to be deaf until the old woman died.
The story is when an old woman comes to Hatim. He wants to consult with Hatim about religious matters. But suddenly a loud voice came from the woman. Apparently, he farted, until heard by Hatim. The look on her face seemed to contain shame. His face turned red. The woman felt disrespectful towards the great ulema with a high position in society.
Hearing the sound of the fart, Hatim did nothing. This scholar understood the feelings of the woman in front of him. He continued to behave properly. His expression did not seem to change in the slightest.
The woman was surprised to see Hatim's attitude, and with a feeling of shame, the woman said: "Actually I want to ask something." Then Hatim pretended not to hear and spoke in a loud voice, "What's wrong mom?"
"I want to ask something," the woman answered in a louder voice
"What's wrong mom?" Hatim asked the question again.
"Sorry, I have something to ask!" Answered the woman in a very loud voice.
"Oh, you want to ask. Sorry if you speak please amplify the sound because my hearing is not good. I am deaf, "replied Hatim in a loud voice. Hearing Hatim's words, the woman was relieved. He thinks Hatim is truly deaf.
